It seems like such a silly question, doesn't it? I live in Canada, and we are inundated with pizza places. And to the best of my knowledge, they all deliver. I have at least 10 different pizza joint flyers coming to my home each week.
Why am I asking if you get pizza delivered? Simple. I'm reading Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently book "The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul", and although only 70 pages into it, one of the main characters, Kate, is rather upset at the fact that she cannot get a pizza pie delivered to her home in London, England. She tries and tries, to no avail. It is the only thing she misses about living in the United States (New York I believe).
So it got me to wondering if this is actually true. Are pizzas delivered to homes in England? Are they delivered to your home, wherever you live? Is it just a north american thing?
[question posted by CanadaGal]
responses and comments:
In the UK,there are a plethera of companies who do Pizza home deliveries. We see the delivery guys dotting about the city on mopeds and scooters with boxes on the back delivering them all the time Even in an out of the way back water like where we live,we can get them delivered to,if we wanted to,which we never would. [rintintin]
It did seem rather odd, that no pizza deliveries take place according to the book. [CanadaGal]
I don't know about England, but in my state, I know there are dead zones in areas where either it's considered too dangerous for drivers to deliver to those areas OR it's not within a 8-minute delivery zone for any specific store. [michelyn]
There are certain limits like that where I live too. [CanadaGal]
I'm in So. Calif. & we get all kinds of foods delivered from chinese to american to french to pizza...Lori [dumblnddzzy]
Who's the one with the p3cker then, eh?:P [CanadaGal]
yes we have pizza delivery in Australia but then again I dont think they would have that in the remote areas. Where I live there is probably 50 pizza places in 10km radius from my house. We always buy from the same place and its about 1.2 km from my home so we go and pick them up I save lots of money that way as delivery would be twice the price I pay for pick up. [violeta_va]
my local pizza place delivers cupons all the time so we never buy full price so with cupon I pay $4.95 per pizza pick up if it was to be delivered again with cupon its $8.95 I dont know how much the normal prices are to be honest but I would think there is the simmilar difference again. [violeta_va]
In my area that I live, pizza is delivered to me. I am not sure about the fact that whether pizza is delivered to homes in England. However, I searched for more information and pizza and almost any type of food is delivered in England. As a matter of fact, I found an article on BBC.co.uk that told a story about how a pizza delivery guy was robbed at gun point in London, England. Based on this, I come to the conclusion that there is pizza delivery in England. -Feel Free to Disagree! [superjockh]
That would be a most logical conclusion indeed! [CanadaGal]
I cannot get a pizza delivered to my hosue, CanadaGal. I live way out in the middle of nowhere. It's not gonna' happen. [Transdisc]
Maybe we should form a club? I'm out in the boonies too! [ljegbers]
You are supposed to be able to get delivery in my town, but the only pizza place that delivers is never open! [cripfemme]
lmao! how can that possibly make for good business? haha! [CanadaGal]
I grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota and there were a dozen different places that would deliver not only pizza, but ribs, chicken, pasta and just about anything else you could want. I moved to the Washington State to a very small town. When we moved here there was only a McDonalds for fast food and no one that delivered pizza to my house. We had to call in ahead and pick it up. Now we finally got a Dominos pizza place that delivers. I don't really like Dominos, but I can stand it. There are no other places that deliver anything to my home. I miss the larger cities for that reason, but don't miss the rest of the crap that goes along with them. I prefer to make my own pizza. We use homemade bread dough for the crust and fill it with everything we can think of putting on it. After two pieces and a brew or two, I'm satisfied. [cheesehater]
Dominos is a favourite in our house... the boys like it best because that's the company that brings pizza to their school for pizza lunches. I'd rather the homemade ones as well. But I need to buy a pizza stone to make them proper. [CanadaGal]
Not only can we get pizza delivered to our door, I have to say we don't even have to talk to a person anymore to order it, you can order it online. the thing is I don't like to order pizza from those places because its just not good quality, for just a couple dollars more that they charge a medium pizza, I can go to our local wholesale club, BJ's warehouse, I can get an 18 inch pizza pie for 8.00, 10.00 if I want hte meat lovers pizza. So rarely do we go anywhre anymore to order pizza because its either cheaper to buy our own, and then put our own toppigns on, or buy the UNO's 18 inch large. Mooch [oneandonemakesix]
I stock up on the frozen pizzas when they're on sale for $2.99 or $3.99. It saves a LOT of money when feeding 3 boys. [CanadaGal]
Nope, not out in the boonies! And I live in North America! Welcome to Nebraksa where pizza is scarce unless you're making your own....not that's country living! [ljegbers]
That is hard to imagion. But then again I live in fairly large city in the distant suburbs of a major city. Pizza, subs, chinese, practically anything that is not fast food will deliver. I have noticed that a lot of places charge a pretty penny to deliver. [AICIRT81]
I live in the downtown. Besides, there are two pizza restaurants nearby my home. So it has no problem for me to get a pizza delivered to my home. [youless]
that sure sounds handy :) [CanadaGal]
I'm from Zagreb (Croatia) and here, you can get pizza delivered from almost ten different pizza places... [Skills]
proof positive it's not just a north american thing :) [CanadaGal]
Here in Singapore, it is easy to have the pizza outlets deliver their pizzas to one's home, and they are quite efficient. All I need to do is to call their hotline for delivery, even if it is a special day like New Year's Day or Christmas. I can also easily get home delivery for McDonald's as well as KFC and other fast foods. Usually the delivery people come around on motorcycles or scooters. It is a very competitive environment here, and if an outlet decides not to provide such a service, it may lose out on business to its rivals. [lexus54]
I wish we had McD's delivery here, without paying an arm and a leg for a courier service to get it. [CanadaGal]
I am in Singapore and pizzas here (from the bigger pizza chains) are delivered to most places (no P.O. boxes of course)... But if the place is too out of the way, then they might not deliver it. Or sometimes, it depends on the company. If the company is too small, they might only deliver to certain areas. [lordwarwizard]
that sounds the same for where I am. [CanadaGal]
Yes i get pizza delivered to my house.I got four different pizza shops around my house from where i can order pizza. The delivery of pizza is quick, just half an hour for the pizza to arrive [vicky30]
The delivery time is pretty fast where I am too. [CanadaGal]
I am in north america as well, and I can not get a pizza pie delivered to my home - we live so far out in the boonies - there are only two pizza places in town and only one that does do deliveries - I once was so desperate that I told the deliverer I would give her $5 extra to come out my way - it was lucky for her as she lived just beyond where I live anyhow and was able to do the delivery on her way home. [Modestah]
lol! lucky for you! I have been that desperate for a food craving before.. whoppers from burger king, when I was pregnant. [CanadaGal]
i don't know about other places but in India we have lot of joints who do door delivery.i guess its the same everywhere..stories are just fiction....so they are unrealistic!! [anjalisk2005]
I know it sounded rather ridiculous of a statement in the book, which is why I brought it to mylot. My curiosity got the better of me. :) [CanadaGal]
Rintintin and others have given you the answer. But even down here in the wilds of Southern Wiltshire we have at least 3 pizza delivery firms. I am not a big fan though, it mostly tastes like mush. I'd rather make it - but the girls prefer Pizza Hut every time. Wonder why? [p1kef1sh]
I am so tired that I found that comment hysterical. I have literally been shaking with laughter. [p1kef1sh]
i live in India. we get pizza delivered at our home. actually it also depends on the distance of your home from the pizza shop. actually there are pizza shops here but not indunted with it. [subha12]
There are too many pizza shops here I think. There are even more "Tim Hortons" coffee shops though. [CanadaGal]
Wow, I've never heard of not being able to get pizza delivered in a city anywhere. Never thought about it I guess. I've lived in places where pizza wouldn't be delivered, but it was all because of being in the middle of nowhere. One trailer I lived when I was younger was literally plopped down in the middle of a clearing in the woods. I wasn't getting any pizza there. ;P Where I live now, there are several places that deliver pizza, though some of them charge extra when the weather is bad. [lecanis]
I have to say, I don't really blame them for charging more, considering the type of weather we have where I live. I've been impressed at the type of weather they'll come out in, actually. I've been able to get pizza on some days I wouldn't have wanted to leave my home. [lecanis]
We live in a rural area and we can't get a pizza delivery out here. At least not yet. Heck we just got a grocery store here a year ago december. We are finally moving into modern day time out here!! woohooooo.....There is a dominos being built, so in time we will have the luxury of delivery. And believe me, I will be one happy camper! Have a great day. [PamE53]
Yes, you will like having the option to order in, eventually. Only just got a grocery store in December? wow! I can't imagine that. [CanadaGal]
i think it also depends on the size of your town, I visited alvinston ontario and they don't have a taxi, a bus or restaurant delivery of any kind. hey if you like to read, help out a fellow canadian and check out my books? [winterose]
I've never heard of Alvinston. Granted, I was born and raised in Toronto, and when you're in T.O., you don't know or learn about much of anything outside of T.O. [CanadaGal]
Pizzas deliveries are done in most towns all over the world even in Chennai India where i live. And Today is my daughter's weekly Pizza day. [balasri]
lmao! shall do! :D [CanadaGal]
If I was still living back home I;d say that was a silly question simply because it'd be unheard of to me...HOWEVER LOL where we are living now here in NY, I now know better....We live 15 miles outside of a couple of little towns and only a couple of the pizza joints offer delivery to our area.. [Ravenladyj]
I thought it a silly question too.. and yet I still asked it. LOL! [CanadaGal]
I live in the same city as you, so you already know my answer ;).... but when I call the Pizza place they don't even ask my address anymore, just show up 15 minutes later with pizza in hand. Back to TLDTTOTS (The Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul, I am a computer geek I abbreviate everything), it was published in 1988, and if I remember correctly Adams wrote it in the early 80's actually, it is possible that while pizza delivery is more common now in London, that it was less popular and thus more difficult to find a decent pizza delivery place. On my one trip to London England the day we flew in to Heathrow we spent hours looking for a place to eat that wasn't fast food or ridiculously expensive, in the end we ended up spending nearly 20 pounds each on hamburgers in a bar that tasted like crap. Our problem was we were after the dinner hour and figured we could just go to the pub and get pub fare, however almost all pubs had closed the kitchen and the best we could do was get some chips. We would have done the fish and chips route at one of the thousands of chipers, but I was highly allergic to fish at the time and didn't want to test British health care system just to have a full belly. We stayed in London just shy of a week and it wasn't until we were headed back to Heathrow to head home that we discovered this little out of the way pub that serves food 24-7, the food was outstanding, the silly part is it was less then a block away from our hotel, we just didn't go that way because it looked residential rather then business. The only reason we went down this road at all was we had some time to kill and thought we'd go for a walk before finding a place for lunch. I had the best steak and kidney pie of my life at that pub. [Myrrdin]
yes, some things come in handy more than others. [CanadaGal]
Yes, we can get pizza delivered, you can literally get it from anywhere. I thought everyone could get pizza deliveries. [gemini_rose]
I had that very same assumption. It appears that we were both wrong. :) [CanadaGal]
We get pizza delivered all the time, but living in a small town there are only a few to choose from. I worked at one, and although i left there on bad terms, i always get my friends to order from there. i'm afriad if they found out that it was me ordering the pizza and panzerotti's theyd spit in it or something lol. [Sissygrl]
lol.. I'm the same way. GO KARMA!! [CanadaGal]
We are able to have pizza delivered from 2 shops where we live. Dominos and a local chain called Pizza Joes. Dominos is cheaper, but Pizza Joes is better tasting pizza. We dont have pizza delivered very often,We have a pizza night every 2 weeks or so,but we buy the take and bake pizzas from wal-mart and bake them ourselves. They are really good and alot bigger and cheaper than pizza chains pizzas. [lightningMD]
Nothing beats the little mom and pop pizzerias... you are fortunate to have one available to you. :) I usually do the store bought frozen pizza as well. It is much easier on the budget. Taste wise, I still prefer ordering in. [CanadaGal]
*LOL* I'm not in the UK but can I still answer? Well, currently I'm in Edmonton, and although MOST pizza places deliver, for some reason Domino's refuses to deliver to my area. It's not a rough part of town by any stretch, nor out of the way, but they refuse to deliver here. I actually had a Deluxe Pizza Hut Stuffed Crust for supper last night though. Delivery is a God send for those who are moving! Anyway, tomorrow I'm moving back to my hometown, and where my folks live they are much too far to be delivered to so any pizza I eat over the next 3-4 months will be ate in the restaurant or picked up. [breepeace]
There was an area near to me that Pizza Pizza wouldn't deliver to when I was in Toronto. Apparently too many of their drivers were held up by the kids there. Maybe something like that happened in your area in the past? I hope you don't miss the pizza delivery too much when you move. But you're right.. pizza delivery IS a godsend when moving! I can't imagine a move without it. [CanadaGal]
I don't much know about the pizza businesses in London - but the book sounds good :) I will have to put it on my reading list. Thx CanadaGal :) [Herbyjan]
sounds good, I'll do that :) [Herbyjan]
Ya you can text, call, or even email them your pizza order. [aarontb]
I've never heard of someone texting in a pizza order..cool! [CanadaGal]
Oh there are pizza deliveries here in our city. But we can't get a pizza delivered to our home. Because we live way up in the mountains, there are more trees than houses. lol. We don't have an exact home address. I bet the delivery guy would get lost. And that would be a waste of a good pizza. ^_^ [swirlz]
Yeah, it is really a blessing to get to live here. But getting to school is a big problem. hehe. And we can't get any deliveries late at night when we get hungry. Especially if you're craving for something like pizza! [swirlz]
yes. I can get a pizza delivered to my home . I live in the south of Italy. Often I do it by myself. What a pleasure! only if I'm in a hurry or I cannot wait I order it. It arrives hot and well packaged. Often I add some chips. [emoon76]
the only time we get more than just the pizza, is when it's part of a meal deal with wings and taters. [CanadaGal]
I live in a big city from Romania and I know that we can have pizza delivered here, but I'm more of a home-made pizza fan myself,I don't like others pizzas either. [sergedan]
Oh yes! Anybody that will take that trip to make sure my pizza craving is satisfied deserves a nice sized tip :) [mrslisae]
well i live in ontario here and we can get pizza here but i think it is actually cheaper if you pick it up yourself...we can get a whole pizza for $5 where i live :-) [cher913]
we have that here in London, Ontario at the Little Caesar's pizza place... $5 for a medium pepperoni when picked up. [CanadaGal]
no, they are also in Italy, we have many pizza-men here! [argo979]
I would hope that was the case in Italy! lol! [CanadaGal]
I am from india and here pizza delivery is very common. And that too in a guranted period of time or you dont pay for the pizza. A lot of competition out here in my city and all type of food can be simply ordered on phone to be delivered at home. [limcyjain]
I'm learning there's a lot of that all over the world, thanks to this discussion. :) [CanadaGal]
It may just be a North American thing. Having not lived outside this country and having Pizza Friday delivered often. I couldn't say. But there are those days where I wish more than Pizza was delivered! Cannot have everything I guess. Enjoy your book. [ersmommy1]
All this talk of pizza had me ordering KFC for dinner tonight. lol. And the book is great. :D [CanadaGal]
I cannot get a pizza delivered to my home from certain places. I live in a small town in Ohio. For 10 years Pizza Hut would not deliver to my house because I was not inside "city limits". (My house is on a main road, 3 minutes out of town.) They do deliver now but charge a delivery fee to bring it to us. There is another local shop that does deliver and we have been most valued customers for 15 years or more. There are 4 pizza shops total in my town, and 1 will deliver to my house. So they get our business! [enchantedleppard]
Thank you so much for best response. Its greatly apprciated! [enchantedleppard]
I am able to get a pizza delivered to home, if I wanted to. I live in a college town, so it's probably a requirement. I used to live in an area where pizza was not delivered, because it was too dangerous for the delivery personnel. [KATRINKA]
haha.. I think you're right about it being a requirement in a college town. I know many universities that have their own pizzerias on campus, and students can use their meal plan money to pay for the deliveries. [CanadaGal]
I have to say that it is not just an England thing. I'm in the US and cannot get a pizza delivered to my home. Why? Because I live just a few hundred feet where the cut off for delivery ends. So when my family wants a pizza I have to drive to pick it up. It sucks, but that's what I get for living in the boonies. :P [sacmom]
That would upset me... just a few more feet! ugh! [CanadaGal]
Yep in England we live on home deliveries for our food. I used to always order a pizza meal to be delivered, chinese or an indian! Now that I am in Tunisia however there are no such thing as home deliveries for your food and it drives me crazy, mind you we dont have a McDonalds, KFC or Pizza Hut either so thats even worse - I miss being able to ring up and order my food for it to be delivered. [sugaredprincess]
I would miss that too. But on the bright side, think of all the money you're saving! :D [CanadaGal]
I live in Indiana and we have a ton of Pizza places. But we also live in the boonies. So there is only 2 places that will deliver to us.The funny thing is.The 2 that will deliver are the two that are farther from us. The close ones won't deliver. [pat1959in]
lol! that is funny! :D [CanadaGal]
Luckily it gets delivered to my door here. But i am not fond of it anyway. We have Dominnos Pizza just 2 blocks away from my residence.I'd prefer to order fries and burgers or fillets from MC D.even though it takes a little more time to be delivered to my place. [rekhum]
come to think of it, I'm not really a big pizza fan either. But because I have kids that are, it is a staple meal in our house. [CanadaGal]
We have 4 different pizza places within a mile of our home that all deliver. We order out a lot when the weather is poor and no one feels like cooking so I don't know what I would do if we didn't have any places at all that did food delivery. [lena_mae1983]
I do that too.. did it tonight even. It was a yucky snowy day today. I was told that the usual 44 minutes delivery could take closer to 1 1/2 hours, but I didn't care. I just did NOT want to cook! lol! [CanadaGal]
I live in the United States the city I live in only has Pizza Hut that delivers. We have a bar that does carry out with pizzas and we have a carryout service at the Caseys gas station but the only delivery is Pizza Hut. [luvstochat]
I'd be okay with that.. my favourite pizza is from pizza hut. :) [CanadaGal]
I live in MN, USA. We have pizza, subs, chiken and ribs, you name it we can get it. Some have free delivery some don't. Some are very pricey and some are very cheap. I like that I have all those options, it is handy. [Deea48]
I agree, it is very nice to have so many options. :) [CanadaGal]
s i am eating PIZZA right now ...i but not the one specified by you [manigandan18]
I hope it was good :) [CanadaGal]
We have like 2 pizza places here and they both deliver but we rarely order from them b/c we both really like the freshetta's that you buy at the store. Their frozen pizza's but are wonderful once cooked. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~ [twoey68]
If I could find a frozen pizza I preferred over the order in kind, I would rather go that route too. [CanadaGal]
I remember that when I read the book! I even heard coroboration of it on a British TV show, but all of that was years ago and was only for the inner part of London. Things may have changed alot since then: The book was first copyrighted in 1988:: I just happen to have my copy right here :) I can get a dozen different places to deliver where I am now, but when I was growing up my family lived just outside everyone's delivery range. Country life can suck! Keep reading Douglas Adams, May He Rest In Peace! [heathcliff]
I'm about 1/2 way through the book now, and next will be "The Salmon of Doubt". Then I'll be done, aside from reading radio transcripts and joint ventures, which I'm not sure I'll bother with. [CanadaGal]
i suppose food deliveries are everywhere. :D we have pizza deliveries too here in manila.. but pizza parlor aren't as many as your place. [chiyosan]
