Oh No!! Another Food Recall: Pizza

Just when you thought it was safe to buy food without possibly getting sick...think again. Now this time it's one of our favorite foods...PIZZA and due to e.coli contamination. Here's a quote from one of the websites: The recall affects approximately 414,000 cases of pizza products currently in stores and all similar pizza products in consumers' freezers. It includes eight SKUs (stock keeping units or UPC codes) of Totino's brand frozen pizza and three SKUs of Jeno's brand frozen pizza with pepperoni topping, or incorporating pepperoni in combination with other toppings. The specific products in the recall include:Brand Product SKU number Totino's Party Supreme 42800-10700 Totino's Three Meat 42800-10800 Totino's Pepperoni 42800-11400 Totino's Pepperoni 42800-92114 Totino's Classic Pepperoni 42800-11402 Totino's Pepperoni Trio 42800-72157 Totino's Party Combo 42800-11600 Totino's Combo 42800-92116 Jeno's Crisp 'n Tasty Supreme 35300-00561 Jeno's Crisp 'n Tasty Pepperoni 35300-00572 Jeno's Crisp 'n Tasty Combo 35300-00576 The frozen pizza products were produced in the company's Wellston, Ohio, plant and distributed to retail establishments nationwide. The potential problem was uncovered by state and federal authorities investigating 21 occurrences of E. coli-related illnesses in 10 states. Approximately half of the individuals who became ill were hospitalized as a result. The earliest case reported to state authorities occurred on July 20, and the latest case reported occurred on Oct. 10. Nine of the 21 people reported having eaten Totino's or Jeno's pizza with pepperoni topping at some point prior to becoming ill. Since July 1 of this year, Totino's and Jeno's have distributed more than 120 million pizzas nationwide. Totino's and Jeno's, working in cooperation with federal and state food safety authorities, launched an investigation immediately upon learning of the potential problem. The whole article is here http://www.generalmills.com/corporate/media_center/news_release_detail.aspx?itemID=29007&catID=227 It seems to be affecting their frozen pizzas that have pepperoni. My question is...Are ANY of the frozen pizzas safe that have pepperoni in it? And yikes..I was just thinking about buying pizza when I went shopping yesterday and the Jeno's brand was on sale..Didn't get though.

responses and comments:

Hi pyewacket,we do not have this kind of pizza brand here,so i still will eat my big pizza for dinner, hehe.Just teasing:)Lately alot of food is being recalled but the last one that i did not enjoy was the one for the pet food.Quite a few animals died or either became very sick and had health complications after from eating it.Pretty soon it will not be safe to eat any kind of store bought food, its more safe to make this stuff ourselves,we know whats going into i. Peanutjar:) [peanutjar]
I know, I think we're all going to have to go back and really make all our own foods, even pet food..that was the worse recall I admit. Feel so bad for all those pets that died because of the tainted food [pyewacket]

wow i just heard about this on the news and i am so glad that when i went to the food store wednesday that i didnt buy them, because they were on sale, but instead we bought red baron, which are really good.i hope there isnt gonna be another recall on those pizzas i bought.pattie [3lilangels]
They were on sale in my store too, and was going to get some but changed my mind--they don't sell red baron around here, least never noticed [pyewacket]

This is quite alarming. I had several of these in my freezer. I am sure they probably buy their pepperoni from someone that also sells packages of it on the shelf. It looks like we would see some of that being recalled also. I hope they get this under control soon. I cannot believe the amount of recalls lately. We have eaten alot of those pizzas in the past 2 months. We did have what we thought was a stomache virus over a month ago. Makes you wonder now. [Thoroughrob]
It does seem to be the pepperoni types that are affected, so it does make you wonder if it's the pepperoni itself ...so that could mean a lot more recalls??? [pyewacket]

that does comt to mind if all with pepperoni on them and daughter just bought some and we have eatten. but didnt get sick but also we put extra pepperoni on them from that single pack you can buy and not sure of the brand on either as I havent been cooking for a couple of months oh well not dead yet some must of not got the bad stuff. Will keep eye open tho and no t buy this brand od pzza which we usually dont. hugs thanks [Lakota12]
I know guess we will have to stop eating any processed foods. [Lakota12]

Well it looks like me eating that stupid wheat crust pizza from the health food store has paid off. I am in no danger from that recall. Not that the wheat crust pizza isn't good, it is surprisingly better than a personal pan pizza you could get from Mazzios or Pizza Hut. But I've eaten it so much now I'm sick of it. [AmbiePam]

Don't you know I'm thrilled that I don't like pepperoni! I can't believe another food scare!! Isn't this getting ridiculous? [ctrymuziklvr]
It is getting ridiculous...mmm, I do happen to like pepperoni too :( [pyewacket]

Guess what I just had for brunch? Pizza! It wasn't one of those brands though... it was the Red Barron pizza. It was good too! That makes me scared to buy anything! [OreoCookie3]
I've never heard of Red Baron...LOL..The brands I like and usually get are Tombstone (what a name..LOL) and Digornio's but have gotten Jeno's in the past as they are always on sale [pyewacket]

Pizza is good food.It contains more callary. thanks [v_kinikar]

It seems like every time we turn around there is another food recall. What is safe to eat? Something needs to be done so our food products are safe. [isaiah12]
The FDA will probably make the same claim as the Consumer Product Safety Commission. "We are understaffed!" [mrawlin3]

It seems nothing is safe anymore. Everyday its one recall after another. The brands in question are not the brands I purchase. I like Digorno. I guess we better make our own pizzas. [venshida]
I think we have one choice left............................ COCOLATE! [dlightbug]

Hi pye, Here in Canada we don't have those brands of pizza so I'm safe! Phew! It has gotten really scary lately with all of the recalls on foods and other products. Thanks for the heads up, and for sharing this pizza information though! Have a good weekend hun. Luv & Hugzz, PurpleTeddyBear. [PurpleTeddyBear]
Actually pye no we haven't had a lot of food recalls down here. Most of the time when we do have one it's from an American product so it gets recalled there first. [PurpleTeddyBear]

Thanks for posting this. My wife gets the Totino's sometimes. Glad you didn't get any of the Jeno's. [dragonryder]
I'm glad I didn't either :) [pyewacket]

"Greaaaaaat....." -_- I'm so glad I don't buy those. But still, my first remark stands. Uh...FDA? Are you there!? *knock knock* Hello!? Guess no one's home. Typical government. And what about the company!? How did they let this happen!?! Is it now "cool" to sell your customers contaminated food and poor quality goods!? Oh wait. Yea, I guess it is, it's been happening for years. Sigh... [theprogamer]
I'm beginning to think the FDA is sleeping on the job. And yes, we've had recalls in the past, but now it seems one after another after another, so like what next? [pyewacket]

I ate Totinos pizza night before last. It was a sausage pizza I think. They're about a dollar each, so I stock up when I go to the store. What *is* safe to eat anymore? [Sacrificialclam]
I thought that duckey looked familiar! [zukepr]

Well that should really tick of some people.I love pizza too.I hope they get it straighted out. [eachen2002]
Everyday just about it seems something new is being recalled [pyewacket]

Its a gamble eating any kind of processed food anymore I am sure that those were the only pizzas affected by this recall Each manufacturer gets the ingredients from diferent sources so lets say that pepperoni company A made the bad pepperoni and they only distribute to pizza makers B and C pizza makers D through Z are not effected because they get their pepporni from somewhere else But that is not to say that those other pepperoni companies dont or wont have issues in their facility Eating in general has become a little frightening because its like playing russian roulette [zukepr]
Zu, I sent you a friend request. Sacrificialclam is not working for me anymore. [MeowMix]

Unfortunately pyewacket, I think that food recalls are the new norm. Gone are the days when you could trust brand names when it comes to food purchases-or anything else for that matter. It does not bode well for our society when we can no longer buy anything with confidence anymore. [worldwise1]
That's the real kicker when these recalls come from large billion dollar companies...Look at the toy recall which was Matel, and these pizzas are from the General Foods company--you'd kind of expect this thing with a cheapie company [pyewacket]

egads, and pepperoni is my favorite. Good thing I mostly go out for pizza and don't usually buy frozen pizza. But seriously we need to get this E.Coli thing under control because this many food recalls is just crazy. What is safe to eat? [Aurone]
I'm beginning to wonder what's safe to eat too. [pyewacket]

Wow, Thanks Pye for posting this!...I had no idea. I haven't bought any pizza lately but was getting ready to buy some next week, could have easily been either of these as I'm only feeding myself, so I look for what's on sale. Isn't this the one of the most bizarre years? All these food recalls in one year....I have never seen anything like it. And the all those poor pets that died from eating their food?....like, what the heck is going on? It's honestly very, very freaky right now. [Kashmeresmycat]
So let's count how many days it is before we hear of another recall..yikes! [pyewacket]

OMGosh!! Pye I bought one of those pizzas and it tasted awful!! Ugh you could tell that the sauce was bad or something it just didnt taste right. I like those pizzas too and buy them when hubbys gone racing and I only have to figure out something for myself. I havent bought any since that last one. Im gld that I didnt get sick from it. I started to call their comment line, but I just threw the box and the pizza in the trash. I guess someone called them! Lol I didnt spend much money on it, thankfully, it was on sale that time too. Bay Lay Gray xx [BayleighGray]
Right! LoL it was less than $2 thats the only reason I bought it! It tasted like it was worth less than $2! lol Bay xx [BayleighGray]

Well, since I don't buy frozen pizza and I don't like pepperoni, I guess I'm dodging this bullet! I think the last pizza bought frozen was when the roomie's nephew was staying with us in 2005 [ElicBxn]
Tombstone or Digorgio's not bad, but I always get extra mozzerella cheese to put on top...LOVE cheese..hehee [pyewacket]

I heard about this on the radio this morning and knew you jump on it. : ) Its pretty gross but my mom never let us eat that stuff as kids so I have no urge to buy them. : ) Thanks for telling us Pyewacket. You are like the mylot new anchor. [kiobug]
Haha, not Katie Couric? [kiobug]

i WORKED AT jENO'S HERE IN mINNESOTA MANY MANY YEARS AGO AND DID NOT LIKE THE PROCESSING THAT WAS DONE. aNYHOW i DOMN'T BUY THEIR PIZZAS BUT i LOVE THE pIZZA ROLLS. nOW i AM GOING TO BE BUYING THE sAMS cLUB BRAND OF PIZZA ROLLS FROM NOW ON. happy postings from grandpa bob !!~ [webeishere]
Can't help wonder if the Jeno's pizza rolls will be the next thing recalled....yikes My mother's uncle (who was a bit of a hypochondriac) would insist on going to the kitchens at restaurants to see the conditions there. If he didn't like what he saw, he walked out. But gee, maybe he was on to something. Maybe if we Americans started "visiting" the processing plants of food items and didn't like what the conditions were, should refrain on buying those foods. Maybe it would get all these foods plants to clean up their acts [pyewacket]

Thanks for the dinner suggestion... Luckily, I don't buy those brands. Now, which will it be?... mushrooms or spinach? [BarBaraPrz]
Mmm...remember the spinach recalls? I'll take the mushroom [pyewacket]

Holy Cow! I buy those totinos pizza's all the time -& they were just on sale @ Bi-Lo good thing all the pepperoni's had sold out |:X [meme0907]
I often buy the Jeno's brand. Was going to the other day and changed my mind [pyewacket]

Dang, that sucks. I love those pizzas, we eat them all them time for a snack or something just to eat when hungry. Well, i guess we got to stop getting them then. [_2blaze]
They are kind of good. Think I'll stick to the Digornos brand from now on [pyewacket]

hi pyewacket. I buy only undersuface of the pizza, this cake, I'm not sure how to call it;). I dress this cake by myself. But it could occur some day that one of the ingredient I use to prepare my pizza is another food recall... I think that food might have been even more contaminated in the past. But lately people pay more attention to this subject. And more cases are reported. It's only my opinion, but food have been, is and will be contaminated from time to time. It is a minimal risk to buy food contaminated in really dangerous way. There are more sources of danger for our health and life, I mean more serious sources, more probable. I'm not scared of buying pizza even if I have heard of such case lately. take care and watch out for your pizza;). jazgottt [jazgottt]
nice to hear it:). cherrs:) jazgottt [jazgottt]

notice the brand "Tortinos "!it should hVE BEEN RECALLED THE DAY the day they put it on the market its awfull always has been they need not wory about me ever buying it ! [revdauphinee]
And because of this recall, I'd be hesitant to EVER buy that pizza again [pyewacket]

Wow, just when U think things can't get any worse. First it was the hamburger meat now its the frozen pizzas. Sooner or later there won't be any food safe for us to whether it be frozen food or not [Cocoa33]
Maybe we should all get farm land and grow everything and freeze and can the food ourselves..LOL At least then we know where the food is coming from [pyewacket]

That is really scary because Totino's is my favorite cheap pizza to buy!! There's been so many times that I've bought 10+ of those at a time because they're only $.99 or sometimes cheaper! It's great, but now I'm sad because they've been recalled! I'd like to know when they'll be safe to buy again... All these recalls on food, and different foods, is becoming too regular! It really makes you wonder if anything is safe to buy and eat unless you make it yourself!! [IssaHam]
I think a lot of people might be wary to ever buy these brands of foods again, I know I would. [pyewacket]

Yeah I had to throw 3 of them away this morning. I saw this on the news last night. [Lifez2short]
Too bad you didn't get a refund maybe?? Hope you didn't eat any!! How many did you buy? [pyewacket]

With all of these recalls over the past few months, we're all lucky that we're still alive it seems. First it was the Chinese toys...in fact, it's still the Chinese toys, and now, the pizza. And how about the lettuce scare a while back? After all of these incidents, I really hope the government will begin to increase the safety regulations for international and domestic products. When the government does fail to do so, I hope the American public will do its job to put pressure on them to do the right thing. [oneill046]
Too bad all of us in the US can't just sue the FDA, since they seem to be the ones putting us at risk and not doing their jobs to regulate things better [pyewacket]

Yikes, I've been eating a lot of junk food lately--namely frozen pizza. Luckily, I splurged an extra two dollars and skipped the Totinos. [nerdytina]
I think we've been getting Red Baron lately. However, yesterday we went grocery shopping and decided to skip the frozen pizza altogether. [nerdytina]

My goodness. This is just getting out of hand with all these recalls.Over the summer it was even pet food. Who the heak is in control of checking all these products? Apperantly they are not doing their jobs. You really never think about these things when you go shopping. I'm surprised at both of these companies, as they have been in business a really long time. I have to wonder about our hospitals and nursing homes etc. To have some tainted food and to serve it. I shudder to think of what could happen. These companies need to step up their game, and be on top of what they produce and send out to the public. It really is a shame that we have to worry about the products we buy. You would think in this day & age they would have high tech equiptment to dectect defective products. [irishmist]
Yes, you would think with all our razmataz high technology nothing like this would happen. Never remember any food recalls when I was growing up. I remember a line from a movie that always stuck in my mind. "Our technology is killing us." It was from a movie that was about fifteen years old too [pyewacket]

I have never been a big frozen pizza fan so I guess I am lucky, but it is disturbing, it seems like it is one thing after another - peanut butter, dog food, fish, tons of toys, now pizza and a lot in between. Nothing is safe - rechargeable batteries, cars, food. I think our society is so technical and we are always trying to cut corners and save money that our safety is being sacrificed. I guess if we don't eat or drink, don't do anything or go anywhere, we will be safe. [Debs_place]
I don't mind frozen pizza. Used to make my own from scratch years ago, and heck just might get back to doing that again. But it does seem like it's been one thing after another with all these recalls. Hehe...mmm...don't eat or drink. don't do anything or go anywhere, we will be safe. Wouldn't be much of a life though :( [pyewacket]

Its time for all of us to buy land and grow and hunt for our own food! Organic! No pesticides to poison us. Thanks for letting us know - I'm going to pass it on to my husband who loves frozen pizza. [artemis432]
Yikes I heard about the ground beef too! Yeesh [pyewacket]

i think the issue of food poisoning should be taken serious all over the world right now ,just few weeks ago there was a reported death of a man that took some fast food and he was hospitalised that very day and he died in the hospital and investigations conducted on the death revealed that some materiuals used in preparing the food had been contaminated with rat droppings [emma44]
Yuk..rat droppings? That's horrible [pyewacket]

Jeno's one of my favorites! How do we know when it will be "safe" to buy them again? [coffeebreak]
I've gotten leary of buying any food from a recently recalled company [pyewacket]

I do not know what the world is coming to. It is not safe to do or each much of anything anymore. I make my own pizza at home when I have the urge for it. I guess that I can regulate the ingrediants this way. Good thing. LOL [sherrir101]
I think I'm going back to making my own pizzas too [pyewacket]

I did not hear about the pizza recall and glad that I have not bought any pizzas in the store recently. I am sure many people are probably worried and disappointed since pizza is very popular. I wonder if this effects pizza at pizza restaurants as well as frozen ones at the store. I wonder what else will be recalled. [kgwat70]
Well it seems the culprit was the pepperoni pizzas, so we have to question how safe is pepperoni whether in frozen or freshly made pizza??? [pyewacket]

I think its about time to start buy some farmland just in case things get bad. lol [Cocoa33]

I love Jenos and would wait till they were on sale 10/$1.00! Oh well, just have to do without for awhile! I like making my own, but can't get the cheese to melt right and that just ruins the flavor of the whole pizza if I can't get that gooey, bubbly cheese thing going on! I've tried the other brands and they just aren't very good. Tombstone is okay and Red baron thin crust. Usually they all have so little toppings it's all crust. Jenos has little toppings too but there's something about that flavor! [coffeebreak]
No matter what frozen pizza I get, I always add a LOT of extra cheese on it, as they never seem to have enough I've never tried red baron, and only noticed the other day that they do sell it at my supermarket..they had taken the Jenos off the shelves [pyewacket]

This is a news to me .So it is very surprising that so many Pizzas have been recalled. But the safety of other Pizzas may - or -may not be linked to these. [ptrikha1]
I certainly hope the other pizzas won't be affected :( [pyewacket]

Oh come on pyewacket, not pizza! They had to ruin this too, huh. I got to see this discussion after I bought a couple of boxes, it's another brand I bought but now I don't trust any of them that have pepperoni so I probably will not eat them. What a shame. [howard96h]
I noticed in "our" favorite store that they had taken all the Jenos pizzas out...I saw Red Baron there, which is a brand most folks here have been talking about and never noticed at the store, but now I'm a bit paranoid about getting any frozen pizza..think I'll go back to making my own homemade [pyewacket]

Wow... i had no idea that they were recalled. Thank goodness for mylot..my fiance takes those pizzas a lot for lunch. Thanks for the info. Its disappointing to see how many foods have been recalled lately. [tlb0822]
Yes, far too many foods have been recalled [pyewacket]

I just heard on the radio this morning about e-coli in hamburgers distributed in Giant in the Washington DC/Maryland/Virginia area. Good thing when we run out of deer meat we buy our meats at Sam's club! Of course you know, they'll probably be next. I just don't understand why the health department isn't able to crack down on the plants that are making this stuff... [reinydawn]

I actually do not like pizza, this is not an Indian food item either. This is becoming popular here only recently. My grand kids eat this at times, but not frequently. After seeing this list I shall never permit them to eat too. Thanks for sharing her. DR.B.SARAF Ph.D. [bhubaneshwar]

Good grief hun, at this rate we will be living on fresh air and bottled water. It seems incredible that in this day and age we cannot produce safe foods, and I wonder sometimes if we should, perhaps, be thinking back to when we bought all fresh foods and cooked meals for ourselves. In the UK we have food scares every five minutes these days, and I have found myself becoming more and more aware of the need to prepare fresh foods rather than rely on processed and convenience foods now. [recycledgoth]
LOL--uh, fresh air? What fresh air??..with all the toxins and pollutants, and bottled water..yikes did you know they are actually saying that the plastic for bottled water isn't exactly safe either. I wasn't aware that the UK was having its problems too, but there was that one case not too long ago I heard about the hoof and mouth disease thing there?? [pyewacket]

AAHHH!!! not pizza-i'll starve to death LOL i usually get the di giorno's or the freschetta thank god they haven't been recalled..yet? but di giorno makes a particularily good pepperoni. [scarlet_woman]

Oh GREAT!! That's my favorite freaking brand of pizza in a box! And yep - Pepperoni is my favorite topping!!! Crapola! I know I've had some of that pizza. Well I guess I'll just pray not to get sick!!! I was wondering too why the store wast out of my topping the last time I went grocery shopping...this explains it! [GnosticGoddess]

Wow, I hadn't heard about this recall! I guess it's a good thing that I don't usually get those brands. I can't believe how many recalls there are right now. It seems like every time I go to the grocery, I see more and more little recall tags on the shelves. I don't remember it being this bad other years! I guess we all just have to be extremely careful! It's sort of scary... [elisa812]
