Why Does Pizza Come In Round Boxes

I know, a bit of a silly question but my son made me ask it, he saw something on TV about this but they didn't give the answer and now he wants to know exactly why a round pizza comes in a square box. Please feel free to add any other chatter about pizza in your responses as he may have a hard time dictating comments for me to type if this subject gets overwhelmedlol

I would assume, a square box allows you to grab the yummy pizza when it arrives. If it was a circle surely it would be harder to actually pick the pizza up out of the box! And I think that's a wicked answer considering I've been up for 30mins:D [Jaxsky]
Hi Jacksy, excellent answer considering you've just woken up, you could be right. But if it was a round box it could easily be slid onto a round plate! [thea09]

I would probably guess that the cost of making a square box is a lot cheaper than making a round one. Plus I would say that the mechanics for making square boxes are easier than for making round boxes. I remember years ago when waiting in a take away pizza restaurant there was a young boy sitting at the back basically putting the boxes together as they came flat and needed to be folded into place. He was flying through them which I doubt he could have done if they were round. Nice question and it also got me wondering whether a round box could actually be technically called a box, lol. [thedailyclick]
Hope the pizza and Kamaki was good if you went for it, that's pizza not the kamaki rasp Who would have thought such a strange question would get so many interesting responses, lol. [thedailyclick]

the round pizza should be in a round box, that's true. but round boxes would be a hazard for the delivery boys. if a delivery boy drops a square box it lays still on the ground so he can pick it up, a round one would roll away and be lost forever lol seriously, i agree with the theory that it's more cost efficient to make square boxes. square boxes are also easier to open, round boxes can be awkward...you wouldn't want your pizza to get cold now would you? happy [TheModfather]
it can be very hazardous driving when there's a pizza the road missing. sounds like the road surfaces need an extra topping lol [TheModfather]

Excellent work people, we are now brainstorming through the square box/round.....box problem. Plus I think Thea that if you are ordering a pizza rule number 1 is you have to eat it out of the box:P So plate sliding is ruled out! Maybe you should walk into your local pizza place and question an unsuspecting employee hahaha! Hours of fun! :) [Jaxsky]
Well that wouldn't catch on over here, recycling turned out to be a dismal flop as lots of people couldn't read the signs on the recycling bins and it all ended up in together. [thea09]

I would believe it has something to with easier packaging. Like it is easier and cheaper to make the boxes square rather than making them into a circle. But also, when you see how the box's lid opens, how would a circle's lid open? I don't know but, should do some research on it. =) [LairOfMetal]
a square pizza? rasp [TheModfather]

Well, let me guess,...... I think it is easy to lift a pizza (or its pieces)up from the corners of a square box (There is space left in corners of the box where we can insert our fingers and lift the pizza out). If it is in a round box, the shapes of box and pizza will match and in the same size box, it will be more difficult to fit the hand in and lift it out. Well, that`s a bit too small a reason, hmmm. I will keep looking to the responses to this discussion for the answer to my curiosity. [THEcreationist]
Ah, sorry, i didn`t notice Jaxcksy`s answer, it was a near repetition by mistake, but, if you notice carefully, my answer is quite different from the Jaxcksy`s. Now, i don`t get any more reasons for this. If i get, i will certainly let you know. Happy Mylotting!! [THEcreationist]

Tell your son that all i know is that they are good no matter what kind of boxes they come in.w00t. [ANTIQUELADY]

Bundles of square boxes are easier to ship. They have more space to print on. There is also room in the corners for the sauces that are given with the pizza. But from 1988 to 1996 Domino's Pizza chain used the round boxes. They now use a a D-style hexagon carton. Interesting question. Kids do come up with them. [deebomb]
Hi deebomb, I have passed on your thanks to my son, no doubt now he's going to be coming up with lots of ideas. I actually thought this would be dismissed as a one liner with no responses. I had no idea mozzarella came from China! I always thought it was an Italian thing. I love foodie facts as well, I started a topic a while back about what foreigners think of what other people eat whilst in said foreign country and it bombed but the idea was fascinating to me. Thanks for the info deebomb, this is getting interesting. [thea09]

actually the reason why using square box for pizza its bcoz round box is more costly and difficult to produce, it will require more cutting and more folding and of course need with special machine coz u cant just fold the circle box unlike the square box where u can stock them neatly and just pull them out and assemble them... besides the 4 corners of square box will protect the pizza inside against outside environment. [homeshoppers]
lol... yes there is... actually i just heared it before... [homeshoppers]

i had always heard it was an afterthought-that they just had the square ones around when someone got the idea to make them carryout. plus making it round i guess isn't cost effective. [scarlet_woman]
Hi scarlet_woman, when you say that it makes me wonder when they came up with the idea of take aways ( do you really call them carryouts?). It's as if the box came before the pizza. [thea09]

you know what ? always i like the pizza boxes more than the pissa , i just mean i dont like the pizza but when i was baby i was like to keep it boxes lol [george202]
Mike if you'd ever tried frozen pizza on sale in Greece you'd definitely find the box more tasty. [thea09]

Square boxes are cheaper to make, that's it all the best urban [urbandekay]

hi thea09:) Square boxes are easier to make, ship and store flat. Round boxes typically have to be pre-made and are more bulky to transport. Circular pizza is easier to cut into slices. Also, if the pizza were square, it would look weird. If a round pizza came in a round box and fit perfectly how would we get a slice out without struggling or making a total mess...we need the edges of empty space to be able to get at the pizza. Is it possible to make a round box that is hinged and locks? If it is I am pretty sure it would be expensive rather a square box is not only more common but it is cheap aswell happy mylotting :) [arunn143]
Hi arunn, all of the points you've made have more or less been covered EXCEPT the square pizza. Now I know for a fact that I've had square pizza but am racking my brain to try and remember where without sucess. I don't think it looked weird but where on earth did I have it? [thea09]

I think that it comes this way because at the pizza place they just come in bundles flat and the employees have to fold the box together. If the box was round I imagine that it would be a lot more difficult. [_sketch_]
Hi Sketch, a few people have mentioned having to put the boxes together but if as you say just a bundle of flat boxes to assemble then it really wouldn't be much different for the employees to self assemble the round onessurrender [thea09]

I think it is just because a square box is easier to assemble, and lays out more flat than a round box when it is not assembled. Probably is a better use of natural resources as well. [GardenGerty]
Hi Garden Gerty, but as the round box would be a bit smaller then it would be even less of a use of natural resourceshappy [thea09]

He he..Hi there.. I guess..may be the circle box more difficult to make that the square one..just the silly answer i guess...:) [shimanaja]
Hi shumanaja. if the circular box being more difficult to make than the square one is a silly answer then join the crowd of sillies on here, this answer is coming up again and again now and it's getting difficult to think of something original to answer with - I blame my child now - how could a ten year old come up with such a popular question? [thea09]

I've often asked this question myself but have come to the conclusion that it's easier for packaging? Another question I had about pizza is this.. why is small and medium sized pizza cut like a pie into triangle pieces, but large into square ones? Have a nice night [nixxi76]
Hi nixxi, thanks for saving me, after the first few responses I was struggling to respond to the same answers here, I needed some originality. Now I've only ever seen pizza cut into triangular pieces and I've probably never encountered a large pizza as I struggle to eat more than a couple of slices of a normal one. Do they really do that? Of course they can't, you can't cut something that is round into square pieces unless you squared off all the edges to start with - rolleyesyou nearly got me there! [thea09]

Good question :-) I think it is easy to cut it into four halves and eat it...if it is square or any other shape...you anyway cannot eat is as it is...you need to cut it...then such shapes when cut into haives look awkward and I feel it will have sharp corners which can hurt your tongue or throat...hehe... [radx682]
Hi radx, another one with a square pizza scenario but I really can't see the problem with eating a square pizza, something square wouldn't look at all awkward if cut into halves, we often halve our toast after all, but then again you would argue that the majority cut their toast cross wise. Actually sandwiches do look better cut cross wise so maybe I concede the point. [thea09]

Pizza comes in a square box to evenly distribute the weight of the pizza inside for one because the pizza would all be directed to the centre if it was circle that is because a circle has no corners thus it could never place the weight to the corners it doesn't have. Also it is a lot easier to open a square box that a circular one :P and a lot easier to carry too ha-ha [Ace_Anime]
Hi Ace-Anime, a gravitational answer, that's a good one, i hadn't considered the weight of the actual pizza being directed in a certain direction but will take your word for it. I don't agree with a square box being easier to open and if both types of boxes were carried flat I don't see the difference there either. thanks for responding to this. [thea09]

It comes in round boxes bcos pizzas are round in shape. it fits well in it.and does not move here end there in box so dat pizzas dont get damage!!!! [anoopsareen05]
Hello anoopsareen, actually pizza does not come in round boxes but square ones even thought the pizza is round so I think perchance you may have misundertood the question but it does not matter at all. You have given the answer to why pizza ought to come in a round box rather than a square one and I agree that it would receive less damage. [thea09]

Boxes GENERALLY has four corners. w00t Round boxes could be very hard to make. >_< [koalapenguin]
Hi koalapenguin, I would agree that generally boxes have four corners, but only if they are square or oblong of course. If a box was round it would'nt have any corners at all and of course hat boxes are round without any corners and someone has managed to make those and manufactured them. Maybe we should recylce hat boxes into pizza boxes. [thea09]

It is really a silly question that why pizza conme in round boxes. sometimes there exists a questions of such type whose answer does not exist. sometimes a small chilkd asks such a question whose answer does not exist. in the samne way there does not exist the answer of this question. [nitu1952]
Hi nitu1952 I have never seen round pizza boxes myself. Therefore the answer to the question must surely be that pizza doesn't come in round boxes but square ones w00traspw00t [mike197601]

I am pretty sure that it is just because round boxes would be really hard to make compared to square or rectangular ones, which are the easiest to manufacture. Square boxes also stack a lot better, so if you need to store a heap of empty boxes or stack up full boxes, it works so much better with square boxes than round ones. Interesting question! [ethereal1]
Hi ethereal, yes the stack of square boxes is probably why, but it would be just as easy to have a stack of round boxes I believe. The harder to make round boxes has been raised several times already and seems to be perceived as the main reason why the pizzas come in square boxes rather than round boxes. Thanks for taking the time to answer. [thea09]

hiya thea happy I have actually never thought about them being made round, but when thinking about it I expect they would be harder to manufacture. Square boxes that are used now are flat and have tabs and folds to turn them into a box easily, I have no idea what it would take to create a round one. I've always thought about the bags for carrying them home, now someone should come up with a suitable bag. I didn't like having to carry a flat box home, having to keep it level so that the topping didn't slide off and a nice flat bag with handles would be nice. Maybe there is such a thing, but I've never seen or heard of one...if not, get your son to create it, patent it and become a millionaire! whistle Alice happy [Aliceinwebland]
Oh! and one more thought on the square box... it's good to have those little corners to be able to pick up that first slice more easily. [Aliceinwebland]

lolI want to know too why pizza are round.I think may be round pizza is easiest to do.For i have no idea to change tha pizza shape. [busky5]
Hi busky, well I'm still almost certain that somewhere I've had square pizza rather than round. I think it must have been at one of these big Greek do's where someone perhaps cooked it in a big square tray then cut it into pieces, it must be much harder to cook a round pizza at home than a square one. In fact if they were made in a tin they could be any shape at all. [thea09]

I bet it is easier for manufacturers to make the sides in squares. So it's just plain easier to make square boxes. Or that is my guess. I don't know how kids eat just cheese pizza, do you? I love toppings and the more the better. Bread sticks are awesome too. Great questions by the way! Shows how smart he is! [40skycritter]
Hi skycritter, thank goodness you read my whole introduction and actually mention something else alongside boxes, well done to you. We don't get bread sticks served with anything out here, just azle basket of bread. But the taverna that has the good pizzas goes one step further and sort of toasts the bread with olive oil drizzled onto it and brings it with a bowl of olives. Really good. [thea09]

hmmmmm...reading all the responses..not one mentioned square pizzas being made. The town pizzaria actually made square pizzas. That was their signature. If you wanted a round pizza, you were told to go somewhere else. So, of course, square boxes made perfect sense and the toppings, not once, slid around or off the pizza after it was delivered. Everyone loved their pizza which surprises me when they closed down a few years ago. Found out the lady that owned it died and noone wanted to take over it. Very sad day when it closed. Btw..a small square piece of cardboard was always inserted in one corner to help lift out the first slice. [blackbriar]
Hi blackbriar, my son has just pointed out to me that I actually typed up the wrong question and said why does pizza come in round boxes. I didn't realise I did that and no one else has either, everyone must have just sublimanly thought I wrote square as I intended to. I love your answer especially the part where they told them to go somewhere else if they wanted round pizza. It's awful when a place closes because of death. [thea09]

I think the sqaure box is used for several reasons. One, if fits into the warming bag when they go out for delivers - so the warming bags can be set side by side on the seat without sliding around. Two, it's easier to carry Three, is cheaper to make a sqaure box then a round one because most of the cost of anything is in the packaging, not the product. [kprofgames]
Hi kprofgames, well that's a first. I've never heard of warming bags! Pizza isn't delivered locally here but in the big town there are many pizza delivery men tearing round on motorbikes, helmets on their arms and pizzas on the back. In town they have special pizza places I believe but locally there are a couple of tavernas which offer pizzas but it tends to be late evening when it cools down enough to light the pizza ovens. [thea09]

I don't know why pizza comes in square boxes but think you have done well to manage comments to so many responses lol I would like to see triangular pizza boxes personally w00t [mike197601]
Oh, by the way I loved response 22, what do you think of that one, someone coming on to tell me what a silly question it was and we shouldn't listen to children, bet he didn't even expect a responsewink [thea09]

Hi there! I think, every round object attracts us. Other geometrical figures have corners in it for example a triangle or cone. Corners creates a kind of repulsive attitude in some of us, however, round figures are liked by most of us. We are accustomed to see round figures since our childhood, therefore, our preference for it always remains the same. [dpk262006]
Thanks for agreeing with me. [dpk262006]

so they dont have to buy boxes and spend moremoney [erikmama]
Hi erikmama, that's a very unique and insightful observation on the issue of why pizza comes in square, rather than round boxes. Now as a tip to you before you reach the 100 mark responses of less than about 4 lines don't really earn you any money so it is advisable to try and make them the required length, the same applies when you of course comment back to the people who respond to your own discussions. Hope this little tip helps you to increase your earnings here. [thea09]

thanks alot i did not know that [erikmama]
You're welcome but you should have taken four lines to thank me, you'll pick it up but there's lot's of people on here complaining they post a lot and don't earn much money and that is why. Good luck. [thea09]

I might has a lot to do with packing engineering. For whatever product, packing should assure safe delivery at least cost. Maybe a square box is easier to make in batches, and also stored in flat piles. [zhuhuifen46]
Hi zhuhufien, the cost of the packaging has been raised many times so far, as has the storage of boxes in flat piles but never mind it's nice as always to hear your input my friend. The amazing thing is that I actually made an error when typing and unwittingly wrote why does pizza come in round boxes, when I meant to say square, an no one has noticed as everyone of course expected to see the word square. [thea09]

I think it's much easier to make square boxes because making round boxes are time-consuming. They need to shape a circle and make sure it has a perfect shape, while in square boxes, all they need is to check the length of the pizza to make sue it fits the box. What do you think? lol. =D Nice topic! [nrtan2000]
Hello nrtan, glad you like the topic although it is a bit challenging to reply back to so many answers. I can't really see why it would be so difficult to make a perfectly circular box to pop the pizza into, it would probably sell well as a novelty thing and the pizza wouldn't taste any different. Probably though they maybe are more time consuming to make. [thea09]
